Pilling happens when fabric rubs against fabric. To prevent it:
- Turn t-shirts inside out before washing, by hand or in the machine.
- Wash on a delicate cycle in cold water. Less agitation means fewer pills. Cotton can shrink in hot water, so keep whites at 30 °C (86 °F) or below and darks cold.
- Avoid the dryer and hang to dry instead, outdoors in warm months or in a ventilated room in winter.
- Wash heavy items (jeans, towels) separately from t-shirts.
- If pills appear, remove them gently with a fabric shaver or a razor.
